For well over a century, Hardy has been praised as the manufacturer of the most admirable game fishing tackle in the world.
In 1891, the first Hardy Perfect Reels were born. The design has remained popular to this day, with only a couple minor design changes and improvements to the original design model.
The original Hardy Perfect Taupo Reels were introduced in 1958 to ease the catching and handling of some of the most wanted monsters and over-sized trout in New Zealand's Lake Taupo. Taupo Reels were not only essential for catching the big guys, but were also perfect for catching the smaller salmon in the lake. The lifespan of these Hardy Perfect Reels was short-lived, only lasting until 1962.
After 49 years, the demand for Hardy Perfect Taupo Reels returns, resulting in the new and improved re-issuance earlier this year. Improvements were made, including new aluminum, which has been coated with a protective chemical film to maintain strength and durability. Hardy maintained the look, feel and spirit of the original Taupo while making the reel stronger and more functional.
The reel's dimensions remain the same as the classic model:
Diameter: 3 7/8"
Spool Diameter: 1"
Overall Width: 1 1/2"
Depth of Spool: 1 1/2"
Weight: 7 1/2"
While upgrading the Hardy Perfect Taupo Reels, Hardy also decided to modernize their original "Selvyt" cloth reel carry bags. The new bag is made of outer durable twill with an inner flannel lining to protect the reels from scratches and dents.
